Paris Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor Launches Probe into Hammer Attack

"We've gone from very sophisticated terrorism; now we are at a point where we have this basic terrorism using any basic tools they can find", Mr Collomb said in comments translated from French.

In Tuesday's attack, a 40-year-old Algerian student armed with a hammer and kitchen knives shouted "this is for Syria" as he struck at and wounded a policeman, before being shot by police officers.

Another officer shot the assailant in the chest, police union spokesman Yves Lefebvre told BFMTV. The killer was shot to death by other officers.

The minister visited the prefecture of police, 50 metres from the scene of the attack, to talk to officers involved in the incident. After the attack they chose to shorten their stay in Paris, without even a visit to the Eiffel Tower.

The assault was the latest act of violence targeting security forces at high-profile sites in France, which remains under a state of emergency following a string of Islamic extremist attacks. There has been strong police presence on the streets of the capital city since then.

Paris authorities have opened a counter-terror investigation. After the incident, the cathedral building has been locked down, the people have been instructed to stay away from the area.

Hundreds of tourists were trapped for a time inside the soaring 12th-century cathedral, whose flying buttresses and stained-glass windows make it one of Paris' most photographed sites.

"A man I spoke to ran in from outside because he heard gunshots", Mr Thomas added. "We don't know why we had to keep our hands in the air but it made us feel very uneasy,"he told L'Obs magazine via Twitter".

"Everyone started fleeing from the cathedral and police surrounded nearly immediately".
