With the London attack dominating attention, a reduction in the number of police officers in England and Wales by nearly 20,000 during May's six years as interior minister from 2010 to 2016 shot to the top of the election agenda. MSM referred to mainstream media.

A kaleidoscope of London's diversity turned out for a vigil to honor the victims of the London Bridge attack: Buddist monks in saffron robes, Christian clerics in purple cassocks and Ahmadiyya Muslims in black T-shirts bearing the words "I am a Muslim: Ask me anything".

He praised "courageous emergency services and the fearless Londoners who risked their lives to care for others".

Earlier Prime Minister Theresa May defended the mayor, while stopping short of directly criticising Mr Trump.

Khan's lengthy statement on Sunday morning, heard in full by Reuters, strongly condemned the attack and gave a number of details about what had happened and what measures were being taken in response. No reason to be alarmed.

"But the fact is we need to make sure the police have the resources and support they need, and as the mayor, my job is to make our city safe and I'll do my best as the mayor to be an advocate and champion for our police to get the tools they need".

It was met with a barrage of criticism in both Britain and the United States, with former Vice President Al Gore among many public figures who accused Trump of misrepresenting what Khan had said.

In a series of tweets over the weekend, Mr Trump mocked Mr Khan for saying there was "no reason to be alarmed" after the mayor said people should not be concerned by the additional police presence on the capital's streets after the attack. London will never be broken by terrorism.

The two men have history. During the USA presidential election campaign, Khan was among many people who spoke out against Trump's proposed ban on Muslims entering the United States, an idea he said would play into the hands of extremists.

During a visit to Chicago in September past year, Khan endorsed Trump's opponent Hillary Clinton.

The London Bridge attack was the third in Britain in three months that ISIL has claimed, after the bombing in Manchester on May 22 and an attack in Westminster, London in March.
