Israeli protesters call for end to 50-year occupation of Palestine

Currently, some 5 million Palestinians live in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza, according to the United Nations.

Some 6,500 Palestinians are now being held in Israeli jails, many of whom were convicted of attacks or planning attacks against Israelis.

The Arab response to the 1967 defeat was to prepare for the next war which came in October 1973 when Egypt and Syria launched simultaneous surprise attacks on Israel.

The teams reached agreement on Jerusalem, security, refugees, the return of Palestinian refugees to a Palestinian state, and compensation for Palestinian losses due to the creation of Israel.

Once a Palestinian state became a reality, Israel and the Arabs could declare peace and establish relations, ending the cycle of conflict that began with Israel's establishment in 1948.

But in interviews recorded almost two decades ago, a former Israeli brigadier general describes a "doomsday operation" to detonate an atomic weapon on top of a mountain near Egypt during the Arab-Israeli war.
