Guterres calls for two-state solution for Israel, Palestine

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivers a speech during a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the Six Day War at the Latrun Armoured Corps Memorial Site and Museum, between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, on June 5 2017.

The war and Israel's ensuing land seizure displaced hundreds of thousands of Palestinians and Syrians.

During the Monday event, the Israeli demonstrators carried Palestinian flags as well as banners and signs reading, "There is another way", apparently referring to the possibility of the so-called two-state solution.

The issue of Jerusalem has been one of the main sticking points in Palestinian-Israeli peace talks, with both sides refusing to relinquish their claims over the holy city.

On 14 May 1948, the State of Israel was born, but nearly seven decades later, "the world still awaits the birth of an independent Palestinian state", he said, offering once again to work with all relevant stakeholders to support a genuine peace process.

Another activist described the continuation of the Israeli occupation over the past half a century as "a very bad thing".

In a statement on the 50th anniversary of the six-day war, Guterres says Israel still occupies the West Bank, east Jerusalem and Syria's Golan Heights and the occupation "has imposed a heavy humanitarian and development burden" on Palestinians.

Ending the occupation that began in 1967 and achieving a negotiated two-state outcome is the only way to lay the foundations for enduring peace that meets Israeli security needs and Palestinian aspirations for statehood and sovereignty, he stressed. "I, as a Palestinian, citizen of Israel, I really want this occupation to end; I want people to have their freedom, my people, my Palestinian people", said another protester in the above video. Israel was crowned a regional power.

"The establishment of an independent Palestinian state with its capital in east Jerusalem is the real guarantee for security and stability in the region", it said. "We respect our allies, foremost our big friend the United States, whose support we greatly appreciate".
