Windows 10: Get ready for PCs with 'beyond all-day' battery life

Windows 10: Get ready for PCs with 'beyond all-day' battery life

Qualcomm has just announced its recent partnership with hardware giants Asus, HP, and Lenovo to manufacture Windows 10 mobile PCs that run on a Snapdragon processor. At Computex in Taipei, Qualcomm said the three OEMs will use the Snapdragon 835 Mobile PC Platform featuring the X16 LTE modem in their mobile computers running Windows 10.

The new Snapdragon-powered devices will support a "hypermobile" experience with long battery life and fast LTE connectivity, Qualcomm said. In addition to Asus, HP and Lenovo, Microsoft listed Dell, Huawei, Mi and Vaio as partners on Always Connected PCs and eSIM, so presumably those OEMs are developing x86 versions.

Qualcomm CEO Steve Mollenkopf recently revealed that ARM-powered Windows 10 PCs won't launch until the fourth quarter of this year.

Today, as part of Computex 2017, Qualcomm and Microsoft are joint announcing the next steps for their Windows on Snapdragon strategy. They said that these new devices would be "able to run "x86 Win32 and universal Windows apps, including Photoshop, Microsoft Office, and popular Windows games".

The performance rendered by the new Qualcomm platform is said to be similar to that of the Intel's U series Core processors that are also meant for the fanless devices. The Qualcomm issue here is somewhat smaller than previous attempts, because as far as we understand it only has to target Windows 10, and they've worked directly with Microsoft in order to support it. Qualcomm and Microsoft say that this combination is now a solved problem with minimal overhead.

The key to this fundamental change is the integrated design of Snapdragon 835, which includes a CPU, modem, GPU, DSP, Audio, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, PMIC and Global Positioning System all on a single integrated platform.

Snapdragon 835 is made on the 10nm process and powers a slew of flagship smartphones, but the upcoming mobile PC platform is going to do an Apple, and really change everything.

McGuire predicts over 1.1 billion new Internet users are expected to connect for the first time in the next four years and Qualcomm wants to head off this massive surge with the next generation of always-connected PCs.

That aside, 7nm offers some significant advantages over earlier technologies, including a much longer battery life as well as power advantages.

Steve Kerr possible to return in Finals, sources say
All I have to say is, this thing better be worth the wait. "I'm in section 124, it's right behind the visitors bench". He's making (for him) a ridiculous 42.1 percent of his attempts from three-point range compared to 36.3 percent.

Surely, putting ARM processors into computers would bump up the battery life (by up to 50 in this case) And it would also bring more fanless Windows machines into the hands of the buyers, a benefit which is primarily enjoyed by Mac users. "To go along with the titanium bezel, ceramic back and Gorilla Glass 5, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 Mobile Platform provides users with the flawless blend of power, battery life and advanced features they come to expect in an innovative, flagship device".
