Yankees held hitless into 6th by Cotton, but beat A's 3-2

Oakland rookie Jharel Cotton held the Yankees hitless until Matt Holliday launched a two-run homer with two outs in the sixth inning that sent resurgent CC Sabathia and NY to a 3-2 victory Saturday.

The Yankees haven't been shutout this season let alone no-hit.

Despite scoring 17 runs in their last six games the Yankees have four wins and can notch another series win Sunday afternoon when they conclude a three-game set with the Oakland Athletics.

Cotton was bidding to no-hit the Yankees for the first time since six Houston Astros did it on June 11, 2003. Cotton, 3-4 with a 5.68 ERA in his first stint this season with the A's, held the Yankees without a hit until Holliday's two-out homer in the sixth. I'd never faced him and I don't think any guys had faced him.

That made the first inning a challenge for Cotton, whose pitches were out of the strike zone when he walked Gary Sanchez, were inside when he hit Holliday with a pitch and were in the dirt when he threw a wild pitch that advanced both base runners.

Looking to build on back-to-back solid outings, Sabathia gave up just two runs in six innings and struck out a season-high nine.

Ever since closer Aroldis Chapman went to the disabled list two weeks ago, getting the ball to Dellin Betances had not been an easy chore for the Yankees.

The big hit was a two-run homer by Matt Holliday that broke a 1-all tie in the sixth inning. The 36-year-old lefty pitched into the seventh and struck out nine.

"A lot of frustration in big situations", Melvin said. Aaron Judge then saved the day for Sabathia as Trevor Plouffe lifted a pop up behind second.

Judge also recorded the first out of the seventh by tracking down a fly ball by Chad Pinder in foul territory and avoiding a serious collision with first baseman Chris Carter.

But after Josh Phegley homered with one out to make it 3-2 and Adam Rosales doubled, Girardi called on Warren.

On the other side, the over is 8-2 in the Yankees' last 10 home games versus a right-handed starter and 4-1 in Sabathia's last five home starts versus a team with a losing record. NY is 7-1 in Pineda's last 8 starts and 10-1 in Pineda's last 11 starts against a team with a losing record while the under is 6-0 in their last 6 games overall.

New York Yankees' Aaron Judge, right, moves to catch a ball hit by Oakland Athletics' Trevor Plouffe after Starlin Castro, left, lost control of the ball during the sixth inning of a baseball game Saturday, May 27, 2017, in New York. The A's second baseman had been on a 16-for-29 streak before going 0 for 4. He struck out Jed Lowrie (which he argued to the point of being tossed), but then followed the same sequence as Sabathia: he walked Davis, and allowed a double to Healy to put runners on second and third. He said he felt fine after the workout and that he will throw again Sunday.

Yankees: RHP Michael Pineda (5-2, 3.35) has given up no more than three earned runs in his last eight starts.

Athletics: RHP Andrew Triggs (5-3, 2.77) is 1-2 with a 3.97 ERA in four May starts after going 4-1 with a 1.84 ERA in five April starts.
