Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak reported to his superiors in December that Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, asked to set up a "secret and secure communications channel" between Trump's transition team and the Kremlin, according to a new report by The Washington Post Friday.

Also at the meeting was Michael Flynn, the national security adviser who was sacked by Trump just 24 days into the job after it was revealed that Flynn lied about speaking with the Russian ambassador on the day then-President Barack Obama announced sanctions against Russia for interfering in the 2016 election.

Mr Kushner held meetings with Russia's ambassador to Washington, Sergey Kislyak, and a banker from Moscow after Mr Trump's election victory previous year.

Those contacts included two phone calls between April and November a year ago, current and former United States officials have told Reuters.

Also in attendance at that meeting was Mr. Trump's pick to be national security adviser, Michael Flynn, who was later fired for misleading the vice president about the nature of his conversations with Kislyak.

This marked the first time the Trump campaign organization has been drawn into the bipartisan committee's investigation into Russian interference in the presidential election, it said.

As NBC News reported, he is considered only a "person of interest" - a term that has no legal definition and does not signify that he could face criminal charges.

FBI investigators are examining whether Russians suggested to Kushner or other Trump aides that relaxing economic sanctions would allow Russian banks to offer financing to people with ties to Trump, said the current USA law enforcement official.

Kushner is a polished 36-year-old property developer married to Trump's daughter Ivanka.

Kushner, who is President Donald Trump's son-in-law and Senior White House Adviser, met with Kislyak in December. However, officials aren't clear what would have been gained by telling Moscow that Kushner sought the secret channel.

It gives the appearance that Kushner was trying to avoid surveillance from US intelligence. Kusher oversaw his own data mining operation for the Trump campaign out of Trump Tower in NY.

Todd Hinnen, the former acting head of the Justice Department's national security division, said it would be easy to read too much into investigators' interest in Kushner.

The newspaper says Ambassador Sergei Kislyak told his superiors that Kushner proposed using Russian diplomatic facilities for their discussions, apparently to make them more hard to monitor.

The investigations into the meddling and potential collusion have accelerated in recent weeks after the firing of FBI Director James Comey, who confirmed the FBI investigation in March and reportedly resisted pressure from Trump to end it's look at Flynn.

Donald Trump's son-in-law is under Federal Bureau of Investigation scrutiny over Russian contacts. Gorelick says Kushner will do the same if he is contacted in connection with any other inquiry.

Additionally, the official asked how Kushner would be sure the Russians wouldn't leak the communications themselves. His lawyer later said it was a mistake, telling the Federal Bureau of Investigation that he would amend the forms.
