Manchester attack: Who is Salman Abedi?


They said three men were arrested on Wednesday in south Manchester, where a day earlier a 22-year-old man was also arrested and a number of homes were searched following a suicide bombing at a pop concert in Manchester.

The suspected bomber has been identified as 22-year-old Salman Abedi, a British student dropout born to Libyan parents who fled the regime of slain dictator Muammar Gaddafi.

But Greater Manchester Police said it could not formally name the victims until forensic post-mortems were concluded, which will take four to five days. Security officials believe others masterminded his attack on Monday's Manchester concert that killed 22.

"My son was supposed to be with us for Ramadan, but he told us he was going to do Umrah, via the United Kingdom, and that's why he left", he said, using the term for a lesser pilgrimage to Mecca that can be undertaken at any time of the year.

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May raisedi the country's terror threat level from "severe" to "critical" Tuesday after law enforcement raided the home of the Abedi.

The raising of the threat level means further attacks may be imminent. Abedi grew up in Manchester's southern suburbs and once attended Salford University there.

The British government says a national minute of silence will be observed on Thursday to remember those who died or were affected by Monday's bombing at Manchester Arena.

Interior minister Amber Rudd said the 22-year-old had been on the radar of the intelligence community before the attack late Monday at a concert by USA pop star Ariana Grande.

"The Labour Party's General Election campaign remains suspended until further notice", a party spokesman said.
