Seoul says North Korea fires an unidentified projectile

North Korea on Sunday test-fired a ballistic missile which traveled some 500 kilometers (310 miles), just a week after a previous launch sparked worldwide condemnation and threats of tougher United Nations sanctions.

USA and South Korean officials say North Korea has fired a medium-range missile, the latest ballistics test by a country speeding up its development of nuclear weapons and missiles.

North Korea fired an unidentified projectile on Sunday, South Korea's military said.

U.S. Pacific Command said it tracked the missile until it landed into the sea.

A White House official visiting Saudi Arabia with US President Donald Trump confirmed the North had test-fired a medium-range ballistic missile but appeared to play down Sunday's launch.

The launch came a week after North Korea successfully tested a new midrange missile that it said could carry a heavy nuclear warhead.

Last Sunday, the North tested-fired an intermediate range missile that flew further and higher than those previously tested.

In February, North Korea used a launcher truck to fire a midrange solid-fuel missile that it calls the Pukguksong (Polaris)-2, a land-based version of a submarine-launched missile the country revealed earlier.

Trump Presented With Gold Medal In Saudi Arabia
The Saudis deeply distrusted Obama's overtures to Iran and were frustrated by his restrained approach to the Syrian civil war . This story has been corrected to reflect that the arms package could reach $350 billion over 10 years, not $350 million.

But the South's foreign ministry slammed the "reckless and irresponsible" firing as "throwing cold water on the hope and longing of the new government and the global community" for denuclearisation and peace on the Korean peninsula.

The projectile reached an altitude of around 348 miles and travelled about 310 miles before landing in the Sea of Japan, the South's military said.

Such tests present a hard challenge to new South Korean President Moon Jae-in, a liberal who took office on May 10 and has expressed a desire to reach out to North Korea.

Moon has advocated dialogue with North Korea to denuclearize. The regime has persisted with the tests even as Trump lauds efforts by China - North Korea's main ally and economic lifeline - to rein in its neighbor.

"We all have to send a sign to North Korea, and that is: "No more. This is serious. These threats are not welcome", Haley told reporters ahead of the meeting.

"If you are a country that is supplying or supporting North Korea, we will call you out on it", Haley said.

The North Korean regime of Kim Jong Un has been aggressively pursuing a nuclear-tipped ICBM capable of striking as far away as the USA mainland. "This is the DPRK's answer to the Trump administration".

Labour's General Election odds slashed after influx of cash
Kezia Dugdale has rejected the view of union boss Len McCluskey, who said he can not see Labour winning the General Election. It is simply wrong to claim that young people can only be given a fair deal at the expense of the old, or vice versa.
