Colombia's defense minister divulged new coca eradication figures ahead of a meeting between Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos and his U.S. counterpart Donald Trump, a sign of commitment to USA policy preferences that may come at the expense of harming trust between Colombia's government and important segments of its own population.

"No politician in history, and I say this with great surety, has been treated worse or more unfairly", he said on Wednesday to the United States Coast Guard Academy. Trump said he acted because Comey, who had been overseeing the Russian Federation investigation, "wasn't doing a good job" leading the agency, calling him a "showboat" and a "grandstander". He said he was "highly alarmed" by record levels of coca cultivation and urged the Colombian government to remedy the problem.

Senators: Rosenstein knew of Comey firing before memo
Trump wrote, ignoring impeachment efforts and blistering verbal attacks on previous presidents and other political leaders. "Mr. Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein told Congress Friday he stands by a memo he wrote bluntly criticizing Comey.

"The United States and Colombia are, today, more than ever, a support for each other, our alliance has been strengthened", said Santos.

While Trump faces controversy on the home front, his meeting with the Colombian president also brought with it another set of challenges. "So by working together, we can be much more effective, and that is a commitment we just made or ratified this afternoon", Santos said.

"That was a long and a very diplomatic answer to your question", Trump joked.

Thus Comey uses his larger vantage point to maintain a handshake even as Trump moves in to create a hug. Comey took the long walk across the room determined, he told me, that there was not going to be a hug.

The two presidents also said they had discussed the ongoing crisis in Venezuela, which shares a border with Colombia.
