Emmanuel Macron prepares groundwork for transition to power

Amid a sea of red, white, and blue tricolor flags at a victory party outside the iconic Louvre Museum in Paris on May 7, Macron said the country was turning a page in its history and pledged to the thousands in attendance to defend France and Europe and "rebuild links between Europe and its citizens".

Mr Hollande announced that the inauguration of his successor will take place on Sunday.

She would be running against a product of the elite system, a former investment banker, financial adviser and later economy minister to the most unpopular President of the fifth Republic, François Hollande.

Macron's presidency will depend on next month's legislative elections. He has previously said he would like to appoint a woman.

Centrist Emmanuel Macron won the 2017 French presidential election with 66.1 percent of the votes cast in a runoff over the weekend, the updated final results published Monday by the French Interior Ministry show.

The president walked beside the 39-year-old Macron to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the monument, where they laid a wreath. The ceremony will follow as- Macron will go to the Elysee and be received in the courtyard by Hollande.

Prior to the election in France, Putin invited Macron's rival Le Pen to Moscow.

Ever since she was five years old, Le Pen was raised to be a fighter by her father, the holocaust denying Jean-Marie, who started the National Front four decades ago.

While he handsomely beat far right contender Marine Le Pen, the country is in unchartered territory after the mainstream centre-right Republicans and centre-left Socialists failed to qualify.

Consequently, the new president's decision to call the German chancellor so soon after the result of the election drew scorn from social media.
