With Chris Cornell's death, a generation lost its Robert Plant

I woke up this morning after bad dreams last night, only to find the real nightmare - that Chris Cornell of Soundgarden was dead.

News of his sudden passing sent shockwaves through the music industry as stars such as Elton John, Jimmy Paige, Nile Rodgers, and Gavin Rossadale paid tribute to the grunge artist.

"To create the intimacy of an acoustic performance there needed to be real stories. And his music ended up saving so many others, they helped others - people like me, get out of a funk", Richards said.

The music style started in Seattle, Washington. As a journalist he was written for hundreds of newspapers and magazines including Rolling Stone, Esquire, Spin, Spy, Entertainment Weekly, Guitar World, Us, Salon, The London Times, The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, Playboy, Q, Mojo and many more.

"What I look forward to the most - because I tour so much, especially the last couple of years, by myself - is the camaraderie".

But at 16 he grew serious about music, learning to play the drums while also working as a busboy and dishwasher.

With his powerful, almost four-octave range, Cornell was one of the leading voices of the 1990s Seattle grunge movement, along with the likes of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains.

"There's something about Seattle, it's always been a hard rock town, too".

Cornell formed Soundgarden in the mid-1980s with Hiro Yamamoto, Kim Thayil, and Matt Cameron.
