White House pushes back on story Flynn notified transition about probe

It begun with Trump's firing of FBI director James Comey, and pirouetted neatly round, just days later, to reveal that the president reportedly asked Comey to drop an investigation into Michael Flynn's ties with Russian Federation.

This latest twist in the Flynn saga follows his very dramatic firing just 24 days into working for Team Trump.

The revelation, which emerged after Trump fired Comey on May 9, has thrown the White House into further chaos and has sparked discussion of impeachment.

Around the time of Flynn's call with McGahn, the FBI began investigating Flynn on a separate matter: phone conversations he had in late December with Sergey I. Kislyak, Russia's ambassador to the United States. In his view, this effort began immediately after the election, when President Barack Obama, who had fired Flynn as the head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, told Trump that he would have profound concerns about Flynn's becoming a top national security aide.

When signing the contract, Flynn failed to register as a foreign agent, which, when an American represents the interest of a foreign government, is required by US law.

The source close to the administration did not blame President Donald Trump for allegedly not making the vice president aware, suggesting it was likely the president had assumed Pence and his team were "in the loop". The answer isn't definitive yet from Flynn, but one would imagine that he's still jockeying for the best possible leverage. And Flynn had been one of Trump's most loyal allies.

Loyalty, while not a virtue he seems to practice often himself, is one of the qualities Trump admires most in others. He was a frequent presence on the campaign trail and famously led the Republican National Convention in chants of "Lock her up!" in reference to Trump's Democratic rival Hillary Clinton.

According to McClatchy, some members of Congress have used the word "treason" to describe Flynn's intervention while he was on Turkey's payroll.

"We believed that General Flynn was compromised with respect to the Russians", Yates said.

"These are two men who bonded on the campaign trail", a Flynn associate told Yahoo. They were together so much during the campaign that Flynn became family.

While he didn't specifically reference recent controversies plaguing the White House during a speech to the Chamber of Commerce, Pence assured Trump's supporters that Trump would tackle "the issues that matter most to the American people". When Flynn left, "the real person who probably took it hardest was the president because General Flynn was the person closest to him on national-security matters".
