USA inquiry on Trump-Russia ties 'hurts our country terribly'

A defiant President Donald Trump has lashed out at what he called "the greatest witch-hunt of a politician in American history" after a special counsel was appointed to oversee the FBI's investigation into Russia's alleged efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election.

Rosenstein, who was appointed US attorney by President George W. Bush and held the job for the entire Obama administration, didn't immediately embrace the idea of a special counsel while facing persistent questions from Democratic senators at his confirmation hearing.

The White House cited a letter from Rosenstein to the president advocating for Comey's dismissal over his handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton's private email server.

"I accept this responsibility and will discharge it to the best of my ability", Mueller said in a statement. When we were asking for a special prosecutor, now counsel, we were saying it should be appointed by somebody not appointed by President Trump. John McCain, R-Ariz., said Trump would be making a mistake to start a rhetorical war with the new investigator.

The congressman said "Former Director Mueller is a well-respected law enforcement professional who served the Federal Bureau of Investigation for a dozen years under both the Democratic and Republican presidents". Flynn, through his lawyer, had earlier asked for immunity from "unfair prosecution" in exchange for agreeing to cooperate with the committee.

Flynn reportedly told Trump team he was under investigation before inauguration
He said he would give the Federal Bureau of Investigation a week and then "if we need a subpoena, we'll do it". Trump eventually signed off on the mission, but only after Flynn was sacked .

"I'm confident Mr. Mueller will lead a fair, thorough, and non-partisan investigation".

Trump is leaving Friday for his first foreign trip, to the Mideast and beyond, which aides hope can have the effect of refocusing a White House in disarray.

Flynn was forced to resign in February after it was disclosed that he misled Vice President Mike Pence about the nature of his conversations with Russia's U.S. ambassador. "Whatever the motivation for the investigation, Mueller is sufficiently well-respected that it likely won't be 'just for show.'" Daria explained that Rosenstein made a really good choice in appointing Mueller to special counsel. He'll have latitude to steer the investigation wherever the evidence leads, including perhaps to Trump's dealings with Comey.

News that the Department of Justice appointed a special counsel, former FBI Director Robert Mueller, to lead the Russian Federation probe rocked Washington.

The Washington Post has reported that former FBI Director James Comey, whom Trump fired last week, noted in a personal memo that Trump had asked him to let the Michael Flynn probe go. The White House denied that account.

Pressure has spiked in Congress for an independent probe into ties between Trump's campaign and Moscow, which USA intelligence chiefs accuse of interfering to sway the election in Trump's favour.

USA stocks recovered ground on Thursday as upbeat economic data emboldened investors to return to the market, a day after Wall Street saw the biggest selloff in eight months on worries the political turmoil could undermine Trump initiatives such as tax cuts that investors see as favoring economic growth.
