US President Donald Trump did not threaten James Comey: White House

Trump then went on to suggest scrapping the traditional White House briefings that have existed in some form since the Woodrow Wilson administration nearly a century ago.

The denials came hours after Trump issued a warning to the FBI Director he fired days earlier: "James Comey better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!" Trump claims he asked directly the former Director of the FBI whether he is under investigation to which he categorically replied: "you are not under investigation".

In the tweet, Trump warned Comey that he may have "tapes" of their conversations he could brandish should Comey go to the media with his account of the events that led to his firing. If these were the reasons for Comey's dismissal, President Trump could have relieved him of his duties as early as January 20, or at any time over the last three months.

Trump told Holt that Comey requested the dinner and asked the President to keep him in his post as Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

"What needs to happen here is to clear this cloud, the cloud that's hanging over the administration, over the president, over the White House, and it would be in everyone's best interest to get to the bottom of this".

Laws such as these, she said, are focused much more on the response rather than the prevention. And if the intercourse is nonconsensual, then it would by law be sexual assault.

Nearly four in five Americans believe an independent investigator should be appointed to look into Donald Trump's alleged links with Russian Federation, a new poll has found. Comey refused to do so, according to the report, instead pledging "honesty".

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that President Trump had considered firing the FBI Director since he came to office, NBC reports.

However, Mr Trump later told NBC News he would have made the decision regardless of the advice he received.

Congress must also work in a bipartisan fashion to establish, by law, an independent commission to complete a full and independent investigation into the ties between the Trump campaign and the Russian government.

Separately, Comey has declined to testify before the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence where he was asked to appear next week as part its attempt to find the circumstances in which he was sacked by Trump.

Trump denies asking Comey to stop Flynn probe
Trump says, "we want to bring this country of ours together". "Zero", he said during the joint news conference at the White House. President Trump publicly denied for the first time that he had tried to pressure former FBI director James B.

"That would be flawless", the source close to Comey told the network.

Trump abruptly fired Comey on Tuesday and later said Comey was a "showboat" and "grandstander" who was not doing a good job. Mr Comey's associates said the new President requested the dinner he described.

Spicer declined to answer repeated questions from reporters about whether Trump tapes his phone calls or conversations with others - or whether there were recording devices in the room during the meeting with Comey. "As I said for the third time, there is nothing further to add on that". Acting FBI Director McCabe reiterated that this is a "highly significant" and ongoing investigation.

The briefing began with National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster discussing the president's upcoming trip to the Middle East and Europe, despite threats from President Trump earlier in the day threatening to cancel press briefings in the face of fallout from Comey's dismissal.
