Trump denies ever urging Comey to back off Flynn investigation

Trump's critics contend several of his top campaign aides - including onetime campaign chair Paul Manafort, adviser Carter Page and former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn - had suspicious, if not illicit, contacts with Kremlin-linked officials.

If a new report about President Donald Trump passing words of reassurance to former national security adviser Michael Flynn is accurate, it could have serious implications in terms of the president's firing of former FBI Director James Comey.

The White House also disputed reports that Trump ignored warnings in November from President Barack Obama to not hire Flynn, who lost his job in the Obama administration as the director of the Defense Intelligence Agency.

The Comey firing and the reports of Trump's attempt to curb the Flynn investigation led to calls from lawmakers, Democrats and some Republicans, for appointment a special prosecutor in the Russian Federation investigation.

Trump also said he "respects" the decision to appoint a special counsel to investigate the Trump campaign's ties to Russian Federation, but he didn't distance himself from his earlier description of the situation as "a witch hunt". It's not likely to matter, though, because according to sources, Trump doesn't feel Flynn should even be under investigation. According to an Federal Bureau of Investigation official and another government official, Trump feels that he "owes" Flynn for forcing him to resign, and that the president is determined to rectify his former national security adviser's current legal predicament.

Burr initially indicated Flynn's lawyer said the retired general would reject the committee's subpoena for his private documents.
