Trump denies asking Comey to stop Flynn probe

President Trump publicly denied for the first time that he had tried to pressure former FBI director James B. Comey from dropping the investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn in January.

"No, no, next question", Trump said when asked by a reporter at a news conference Thursday with Colombia's president, Juan Manual Santos.

President Trump believes that the appointment of a special counsel "hurts our country terribly", he said Thursday, a day after a special counsel was appointed to oversee the FBI investigation into Russian efforts to influence the 2016 presidential election, including any ties between Russia and Mr. Trump's campaign.

Trump also repeatedly bashed his former Federal Bureau of Investigation director, saying he "was very unpopular with most people" and claiming that Rosenstein had chose to write a memo strongly criticizing Comey that Trump used as justification to fire him after Comey had a poor showing at a Senate hearing.

Trump blasted that decision, echoing his Thursday morning tweets and comments he made over lunch with network news anchors that the Russian Federation investigation is a "witch hunt" that "divides the country".

"I think it's totally ridiculous", the president replied.

According to associates of Trump, the president has become mistrustful of many around him amid a spate of leaks about West Wing dysfunction. That would surely include Trump's firing last week of FBI Director James Comey.

He later, however, struck a different tone via Twitter, asking why there was never a special counsel appointed to investigate "all of the illegal acts that took place in the Clinton campaign & Obama Administration". "I look forward to this matter concluding quickly".

Fighting back against multiple crises has consumed much of the political oxygen inside the White House, leaving Trump's agenda in doubt.

"It's always nice to have less drama", he said.

The Daily Beast also reports that some of Trump's advisers have assured him that he "absolutely should not" consider giving Flynn another role in the White House.
