Special prosecutor appointed to probe Trump-Russia ties

The DOJ investigation, it's important to note, is distinct from the FBI investigation into Flynn's Russia links, which stemmed from his December phone call with the Russian ambassador to the USA shortly after President Obama imposed new sanctions on Moscow for election meddling.

It follows the revelation Tuesday that fired FBI Director James Comey wrote in a memo that Trump had asked him to end an investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

The Flynn hiring: As the Times reported this week, the White House knew that its incoming National Security Adviser Mike Flynn was a paid lobbyist for the oppressive, increasingly non-democratic Turkish government and had met repeatedly with Russian officials.

"Everybody, even my enemies, have said there was no collusion", Trump added, even though some Democrats have voiced concerns about possible collusion and suggested a thorough investigation was necessary.

House of Representatives Speaker Paul Ryan insisted that Republicans, who control both chambers of Congress, were not seeing their legislative agenda mired, but the controversy enveloped Washington.

Robert Mueller, Comey's predecessor at FBI from 2001-2013, has a lengthy, close and somewhat controversial history with the man suddenly at the center of investigations swirling around Trump.

The White House yesterday was conducting interviews of candidates to replace Comey as head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The issues were that Trump fired Comey who was conducting lawful investigations into campaign ties with Russia, Trump's admission that he considered the investigations before firing Comey and lastly a threatening tweet that Trump sent to Comey. In a reported memo, Comey allegedly says Trump asked him to let the probe into Flynn go. "Believe me. My total priority is the United States of America", Trump said.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles Grassley also made it clear: "We need to get the facts out in the open". Associates shared the contents of Comey's notes with the media.

It's not merely that Trump is a novice or incompetent at governing - the nation has survived far worse - but his very personality (i.e. his rage, narcissism and simple inability to understand how employees will react when their professionalism is undermined) is causing all the problems.

Former DOJ Spox: Comey Is Trying To Take Down Trump
The president said he thought the ousting would be greeted with bipartisan support. He said that he thinks the appointment of a special counsel "divides the country".

The man tasked with investigating possible meddling by Russian Federation in the 2016 presidential election - a probe that will likely encompass President Trump's recent firing of FBI Director James Comey - once called Comey "one of the finest people I've ever met".

One Republican official, who requested anonymity in order to speak freely, said after meeting Trump recently he did not think the president had a firm enough grasp on the nuances of the long-running Israeli-Palestinian conflict. President Gerald Ford pardoned Nixon in 1974 to spare him and the country from having to re-live the Watergate scandal in a historic trial of a former president. A special prosecutor lends much more seriousness to the proceedings and carries the kind of independence from political influence that simply didn't exist before.

Burr told reporters Thursday about the response from Flynn's lawyer. 'It is obvious there are some people out there who want to harm the president.

With Trump only eight percent of the way through its term, his advisors spend their days swapping rumors of mass White House firings.
