Rewari girls end stir after govt assures to upgrade school

"We had been facing harassment from the youth from other villages who would ride on bikes and pass lewd remarks at us on our way to the school".

The girls feared that they might have to face harassment and molestation if they were to travel to other village for studying.

Sources said the Chief Minister sought reply from the Education Minister on the issue and also, expressed his displeasure over the delay in issuing the said notification even after Government gave assurance on this two days back.

Despite Sharma assuring them on Monday that the school would be upgraded, the students had continued with the stir, saying that until they received official word from the government, they would not relent.

Initially local authorities were reluctant to upgrade the school, for according to them it was not fulfilling certain norms.

The Haryana government issued a notification for upgradation of the government high school to the level of senior secondary school.

Five of 13 girls who were on hunger strike suffered severe dehydration and were hospitalized, but they still carried on with their fast.

A group of 86 girls from the Gothda Tappa village, Rewari, Haryana, have gone on an indefinite strike seeking measures for their safety.

"The principal has been deputed there and from tomorrow admission procedure will start", Sharma added.

The girls had skipped school and were on protest against alleged sexual harassment that they had faced at the hands of rowdies on way to school in another village.

But the United Nations said Thursday the warring sides had agreed to set up expert committees to discuss "constitutional issues". A second U.S. defense official said that an additional strike did hit the convoy after the vehicles continued toward the base.


"The demands of the girls are genuine", village head Suresh Chauhan told Xinhua.

Officials had earlier said the school could not be upgraded as it did not meet the condition of a minimum of 150 students required for the senior secondary level.

Last year, in the same district, girl students of two villages had stopped going school with after a girl was allegedly raped on way to school in another village.

All the girls in the protest are students of class 9 and 10 in a village school.

"Sanction of the Governor of Haryana is hereby accorded to upgrade the Government High School Gothra Tappa Dahina (Rewari) to the level of Government Senior Secondary School w.e.f. session 2017-18". The state has also witnessed some horrifying crimes against women in the recent times.
