Ransomware attack on 2 Odisha hospitals

Berhampur: Berhampur City hospital's information management system attacked by Wanna Cry ransomware virus. One of virus affected computers was being used for e-medicine while the other was part of the hospital management information system.

The computer system was displaying a message demanding Dollars 300 for restoration and access to the hospital s information management system, the ADMO said. ADMO lodges complaint with Berhampur Town police.

Meanwhile, the Information and Technology Minister Chandra Sarathi Behera informed a technical team has been sent to probe into this case.

The important data in the hospital's e-mail were also hacked, sources said. It appears to be a WannaCry cyber attack.

Recently similar cases of cyber attacks have been reported at United Kingdom where Hospitals across Britain cancelled appointments and turned away patients after a large-scale cyber attack by a suspected "ransomware" crippled major IT systems at the health facilities.

The hospital's chief information officer Niranjan K Ramakrishnan told TOI that the situation was quickly controlled as the infected systems were isolated from the networks hosting the hospital and lab information systems.
