The United Kingdom's National Health Service (NHS) has reportedly been using a 15-year-old operating system for its virtual infrastructure, which likely contributed to its vulnerability during the massive cyber attack that occurred Friday.

Experts believe one main reason why healthcare organisations are particularly at risk from cyber attacks may be due to lack of awareness about email authentication in the sector.

The British government said 48 of 248 health service trusts - the bodies that run the hospitals - in England had been impacted by Friday's attack.

Specialists are concerned that computer systems that have not had security patches applied could be infected by the ransomware called WannaCry.
