New Mummy Trailer: Tom Cruise Unleashes a Monster Universe

The Tom Cruise-starring reboot of the classic monster movie hits theaters next month, and this new promo delivers a mix of supernatural thrills and large-scale action. Per the trailer, it seems that Sofia Boutella's Princess Ahmanet curses Cruise and now he's infected with the same evil that courses through her own body.

After some time, Nick Morton wakes up in the morgue, discovering he was cursed by the same princess he dug up earlier.

After a few harrowing worldwide encounters with the villainess - including a particularly thrilling sequence involving the destruction of a patch of urban scenery in London - the fresh sneak peek, released Thursday by the studio, teases a comical vehicle chase scene, which sees a grimy humanoid figure clawing at Cruise's visage while his cohort, played by Annabelle Wallis, tries to kick the monster off of Cruise's Nick.

I'm hoping this movie is better than it looks, but I can easily see this whole strategy backfiring in a big way: if mainstream audiences think these films look too bland, they'll reject them, and if hardcore Universal Monsters fans know that the horror elements are being given short shrift, they'll also reject them.
