Mike Huckabee calls Roger Ailes a 'genius'

At the same time, Ailes' accomplishments were overshadowed by the sexual harassment scandals at Fox News that led to his ignominious departure from the cable channel previous year.

A statement from his wife Elizabeth said she was "profoundly sad and heartbroken", calling him a "patriot".

"He wasn't flawless, but Roger Ailes was my friend & I loved him. Roger was a patriot, grateful to live in a country that gave him so much opportunity to work hard, to rise - and to give back".

The titles of just two Ailes biographies, "The Loudest Voice in the Room" and "Dark Genius" hint to the outsized and controversial nature of his legacy after a five-decade career in television and politics.

"And so even as we mourn his death, we celebrate his life", the statement reads.

There was no immediate indication of the cause of death.

Ailes left Fox News past year after a series of sexual harassment allegations were levied against him. Ailes' death came ten months after he left the network amid sexual harassment charges.

"There's nobody who's going to be able to sit on the stand and essentially say these things that are alleged are not true", said Debra Katz, a Washington lawyer who often represents plaintiffs in sexual harassment lawsuits.

"Today, America lost one of its great patriotic warriors", Hannity said on Twitter.

Neither Mr Ailes nor Fox released any details on the circumstances of his death.

A former GOP operative to candidates including Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush and a one-time adviser to President Donald Trump, Ailes' TV network changed the face of 24-hour news.

Iraq, Azerbaijan and Algeria have also indicated their willingness to see the production caps through to the end of the year. Some of the oversupply indicators waned last week, however, and crude oil prices are up more than 10 percent from May 8.

"A brilliant broadcaster, Roger played a huge role in shaping America's media over the last 30 years".

Many believe Fox News support for President Trump helped get him elected.

Ailes is credited with doing more than anyone has to change the landscape of media but also more to divide the country with great political influence.

By 1992, Ailes had retired from politics and soured on the news media.

But Ailes was also a "tragic figure" who was brought down by "the male libido", said Simon.

A miniseries about Ailes, titled Secure and Hold: The Last Days of Roger Ailes, was already in the works at Showtime, based in part of Sherman's book. In an independent investigation, Kelly told investigators that Ailes sexually harassed her in the past.

Ailes helped found Fox News in 1996. "I don't think there's ever been one source of media that has such a loyal political following as Fox News does".
