Goa Director General of Police Muktesh Chander confirmed the tragedy when contacted by The Hindu at around 8 in the evening on Friday, but said it was not possible to say anything about how many people had fallen in the water or the number casualties. The recovered body has been identified as that of truck driver Baswraj Malanbar (30) from Sanguem. "A massive search-and-rescue operation is being carried out". Many were feared trapped under the collapsed bridge. Some saved themselves by staying on the bridge and holding to its side barriers. Some swam back to the shore on their own.

The Portuguese-era bridge across the river Sanvordem, a tributary of river Zuari, was closed for traffic for the last four years. The bridge was old and was therefore, not used for vehicles. The five persons rescued were admitted to the nearest State government hospital. Gauri rescued three youth who had fallen into the river. "Roughly it could be 40 odd", Parrikar told media persons late on Thursday.
