Chris Cornell's last performance was a song about death

The 52-year-old Cornell had just performed with Soundgarden at Detroit's Fox Theatre. "Three albums went platinum, including "Superunknown", which features songs like Black Hole Sun", "Fell on Black Days" and "Spoonman". Cornell also exhorted the audience to serve as his backing vocalists.

Following Soundgarden's sold-out show in Detroit on Wednesday night, Cornell was found dead in his hotel room.

Cornell formed Soundgarden in 1984, but the band catapulted to alt-rock fame with their double-platinum-selling 1991 album, Badmotorfinger.

Leading up to his death, Cornell seemed happy to be in Detroit, according to his Twitter.

The former Audioslave member struggled with substance abuse for a large portion of his life.

Cornell is survived by his second wife, Vicky Karayiannis, with whom he has a young son and daughter.
