Chris Cornell of Soundgarden and Audioslave dead at 52 (Breaking News)

The Associated Press reports that the medical examiner has determined Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell committed suicide by hanging in Detroit.

Stars from the music world have paid tribute to rock singer Chris Cornell following his death at the age of 52.

Chris Cornell, lead singer of Soundgarden, died unexpectedly Wednesday night. No cause of death was given pending a medical examiner's report.

UPDATE 9:50 am: Dontae Freeman, a spokesman for the Detroit Police Department, told the New York Times that a white man with Cornell's birthday "was found with a band around his neck" in an MGM Grand casino hotel room just after midnight local time. The family friend forced open the hotel room door and found Cornell on the bathroom floor, Woody said.

His death appears to be a suicide, sources [said], though an official cause of death hasn't been confirmed yet.

Formed in 1984 by Cornell, guitarist Kim Thayil and bassist Hiro Yamamoto, Soundgarden released their third studio album, Badmotorfinger, in 1991, featuring popular singles including Jesus Christ Pose, Rusty Cage and Outshined. He later helped form the group Audioslave, which included members from Soundgarden and Rage Against the Machine.

Meanwhile, Democratic leaders quickly described the actions Comey depicted in a memo as "obstruction of justice". Graham also said he would consider a special prosecutor if Comey's recounting of the meeting was accurate.

Temple of the Dog is best known for the hit song, "Hunger Strike", which featured Cornell and Vedder on vocals. "They would like to thank his fans for their continuous love and loyalty and ask that their privacy be respected at this time", his rep said in a statement. Cornell has been a fierce presence in the industry since Soundgarden emerged from the early days of grunge and took the world by storm.

During their 13-year hiatus, Cornell went through a dark period and was admitted to rehab for alcohol addiction. Soundgarden had split up up in 1997 but later reunited in 2010 releasing new works. The band tweeted Wednesday night a quote from Cornell: "What I look forward to the the camaraderie".

In later years, he founded the Chris and Vicky Cornell Foundation, which worked to curb homelessness, abuse, poverty and all of the challenges that children in those circumstances face.
