At least 8 tornadoes struck Oklahoma, killing 1


One person was confirmed dead and two dozen injured.

In Elk City, a community of about 13,000 people roughly 110 miles west of Oklahoma City, Matt Bynum considers himself lucky.

School was canceled Wednesday for the Chetek-Weyerhaeuser Area School District and the district said that the High school building was open for people needing hot showers.

One person in a auto was killed, the station reported, citing an emergency response official. He also added that when the responders first came to the scene there were a lot of people yelling and asking for help. Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene, and to a golf course where a gas leak was reported.

Meanwhile, Wis. Gov. Scott Walker declared a state of emergency for three counties in northwestern part of the state following a deadly tornado and damaging storms. "I think it's simply because people are inundated with those news stories when the mobile home parks are hit because the damage is much more significant". Cattle have been killed, but he says he has no immediate reports of human injuries.

"Our rapid response assessors are in Elk City and nearby storm-affected areas, and we are going to continue to follow the storms", Sam Porter, director of Oklahoma Baptist Disaster Relief, told KOCO-TV.

The man killed in the Tuesday, May 16, storm was identified during a press conference at the Prairie Lake Estates trailer park on Wednesday, May 17.

Chetek Mayor Jeff Martin tells KSTP-TV that numerous emergency vehicles have gone to the trailer park. "So I crawled underneath the trailer inside and started removing the refrigerator from him checking his vitals - I'm CPR trained -- until the EMTs got there, I think he made it".

National Weather Service meteorologists say preliminary indications show eight tornadoes touched down in western Oklahoma on Tuesday.

Tod Pritchard, a state Emergency Management spokesman, said there also was a report of a tornado in Rusk County.
