US government 'under assault' by Donald Trump after FBI director's firing

When he fired Comey earlier this week, Trump garnered comparisons to President Richard Nixon and his infamous decision to remove the special prosecutor investigating Watergate crimes in 1973. "According to a close associate of Mr. Comey, he is willing to testify, but wants it to be in public", wrote Peter Baker and Michael D. Shear.

White House spokespeople later refused to say whether the president's conversations were in fact being secretly taped.

"Yes, that's true", Trump said.

Amid criticism that White House representatives and the president himself have repeatedly contradicted each other, Donald Trump on Friday said it's not possible for them to take to the podium "with flawless accuracy".

But no one had enough to catch leader Busch as the field was setting itself up for a frantic dash to the finish. He still has just one top-10 (a fifth at Texas) and actually lost a spot in the championship standings to 25th.

The interview on Fox comes after a week of intense scrutiny of Trump following his unexpected dismissal of Comey.

Trump also tweeted Friday morning that "maybe the best thing to do would be to cancel all future "press briefings" and hand out written responses for the sake of accuracy", a remark he made after contradicting his press aides and other surrogates on his reasons for ousting Comey. He tells reporters that it's possible an announcement on James Comey's replacement could come before then. But regardless of whether the timing represents coincidence or intentional obstruction, my gravest concern is the profound chilling effect that the firing may have on the FBI's investigation into the Trump campaign's ties to Russian Federation.

In a letter to Sessions, Rosenstein criticised Comey's handling of the FBI's investigation into Hillary Clinton's private email server use as secretary of state. "I was going to fire regardless of (their) recommendation", Trump said in an interview with NBC's Lester Holt, calling Comey a "showboat" and "grandstander" who led the agency into turmoil. "There's nothing further to add on that", he said.

But the president declined to say whether Spicer would continue in his position.

The attack was a reminder that people and businesses should keep their software up to date, or else remain vulnerable, Smith said. Reuters reported that hospitals were canceling surgeries and turning away non-emergency patients to deal with the crisis.

"I think, in many ways, our institutions are under assault, both externally - and that's the big news here, is the Russian interference in our election system", said James Clapper, the former director of national intelligence.

Given the Republicans' narrow Senate majority, the larger consideration for the White House is that some GOP senators also insist on a non-partisan choice as the next Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

Spicer, who kept his answers short during Friday's briefing and largely dodged specific questions about Trump's meeting with Comey, said he was not aware that any recording of the Trump-Comey meeting exists. Lindsey O. Graham (R-S.C.) and House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.). He said, 'This guy is not going to be able to work out long-term for us. He also, like Nixon, has grown increasingly isolated in the White House, recently relying on only a small circle of family members and loyal advisers while livid about the West Wing's failing efforts to get ahead of the damaging Russian Federation story, according to several people close to Trump.

In fact, Trump voters are much more likely to say he has exceeded their expectations than say he has disappointed them - by a lot. The Senate intelligence committee on Wednesday asked Comey to appear before the panel in both open and closed sessions.
