Fallout over Comey memo, Trump's intel disclosures persists

A small but growing number of Republican US lawmakers called on Wednesday for an independent probe of possible collusion between President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign and Russian Federation, spurred by a memo from the fired FBI chief that Trump had sought to impede the agency's investigation.

POLITICO: Trump's handling of classified info brings new chaos to White House - "In a span of 24 hours last week, President Trump startled his senior aides by firing the FBI director investigating his campaign's Russian ties and allegedly disclosing highly classified information to Russian officials in a free-wheeling Oval Office conversation".

The New York Times reported that before firing FBI chief James Comey, Trump asked him to drop an investigation into his national security advisor Michael Flynn.

"I hope you can let this go", Trump told Comey, according to a source familiar with the contents of the memo.

House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) holds a news conference amid swirling White House controversies on Wednesday, May 17, 2017.

Political turmoil in the USA has put investors into panic mode, with stock markets and the US dollar sliding on Wednesday.

The Times report may present the clearest evidence yet that the president has tried to influence government investigations into links between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.

Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President. Elijah Cummings, top Democrat on a key House oversight panel, countered that Ryan and the Republicans had shown "zero, zero, zero appetite for any investigation of President Trump". "We need the facts", Ryan said. Florida Republican congressman Carlos Curbelo, whose district voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016, said that if the allegations are true, it marks the beginning of a "sad chapter", saying to reporters that Congress needs to find the truth, "no matter where it may lead us".

He added, "There is no avoiding having to answer this question". "I think we are in the position now where it's time for an independent commission or a special prosecutor or whatever".

Putin mocked the idea that Trump went off-script to share secrets with the Russians, saying he could issue a "reprimand" to Lavrov since the minister hadn't passed on the information.

The Senate intelligence committee first requested from the Federal Bureau of Investigation copies of his memos, said the panel's top Democrat, Sen.

Putin denied reports Wednesday that the President had shared highly classified information with the Russian foreign minister and ambassador in an Oval Office meeting last week.

The foreign minister smiled back, chuckling at the brief exchange the same way he did when he stood next to his American counterpart, Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, as he was asked about Trump's decision to fire FBI Director James Comey just days after the head of the federal agency reportedly requested additional resources for the Russian Federation investigation. Schiff said impeachment is "not something to be lightly entertained".

Didn't Comey have an obligation at the time to go public with his concerns that the president was obstructing justice, even an obligation to resign in protest? Ryan backed Chaffetz's request. That was followed by a controversial meeting between Trump and high-profile Russian officials.

Lawmakers said they're trying not to get distracted from their agenda.
