City of Montreal declares state of emergency from flooding

Canada's national capital region has also seen severe flooding, with high water levels in the Ottawa and Rideau rivers.

The Ministry of Public Safety said waters were expected to crest sometime Monday in Quebec province.

"What's encouraging is that the water levels will stop climbing", Coiteux told a news conference.

Authorities said almost 1,900 homes have been flooded across 126 towns and cities and some 1,200 troops have reportedly been deployed to help evacuate people.

Authorities are still searching for a two-year-old girl who disappeared in the same incident.

More than 130 communities in the province have been hit by flooding, with some 700 people forced to abandon their homes, but rainfall advisories have been lifted for Montreal and Toronto early Saturday.

The search included swift water technicians and dog teams, Corporal Dan Moskaluk said in a news release. "I can understand the anxiety, the angst people feel right now".

Resident David Swidzinsky has been ferrying neighbors to safety, or back to their homes to collect precious belongings that had been missed in the rush to get out when a state of emergency was declared.

Everybody has a place to go and has food and Transport Minister Laurent Lessard couldn't say when the Galipeault Bridge, which connects Montreal Island with Ile Perrot, will reopen.
