Microsoft going deeper into 'mixed reality'

The finale of the keynote was dedicated to Microsoft's virtual reality venture - what it calls mixed reality.

Microsoft's spokespersons spent most of the first day of the company's annual Build conference talking about Cortana and other AI-related topics. In the video it is claimed that devices running the 835 and Windows 10 on ARM will be available later in the year.

Microsoft surprised everyone with a new Windows 10 Story Remix feature earlier today.

Tottenham's Pochettino, Son scoop monthly awards
Mauricio Pochettino has hinted that Tottenham were "pound-for-pound" better than their Premier League rivals this season. Nonetheless, Pochettino's team are set to finish as runners-up, with Arsenal now sitting outside of the top four.

With modern code, developers can take advantage of Windows and the Microsoft Graph, using Project Rome for UWP, Android and now iOS.

Lastly, Microsoft is adding support for Google's Progressive Web Apps, which are websites which support app-like features such as notifications and off-line support. For developers, Fluent Design is built to help users create more expressive and engaging apps that work across a wide range of device and input diversity.

To that end, the company is introducing a new motion controller created to work with mixed reality apps. Instead, the controller tracks movement using sensors in the device and in a headset paired with it. The equipment, to be made by Acer, will sell as a package for $399, far less than the $3,000 to $5,000 Microsoft charges for another mixed reality headset called HoloLens. Microsoft said that has the potential to make a big difference for users. That's not to say Microsoft isn't doing anything new or better with Story Remix, and the fact that it has squeezed all of this functionality into a single app is an impressive feat. Graph is now rather ill-defined but appears to be the company's name for cross-device features.

Halep outlasts determined Mladenovic to retain Madrid title
The Frenchwoman improved to 27-8 on the season and 12-2 against the Top 35 with a 6-4, 7-6 (4) takedown of her doubles partner. However, the Croat retired at the end of the second set, sending Mladenovic through into the second round.

Microsoft also announced preview availability of the Bash shell in its Azure Portal during Build this week. A video published during the event (below) shows how the system can enable programs to make better use of screen space, use page transitions customized for different content types and animate important elements. It will also alter its responses based on the type of device in use. With it, all users need is Visual Studio and their iPhone to get started building native apps for iOS in minutes.

The SuSE and Fedora Bash shells - as well as the existing Ubuntu shell - are all going to be available for download from the Windows Store, said Microsoft Executive Vice President of Windows and Devices Terry Myerson. The company announced this week that iTunes, Autodesk, and SAP Digital Boardroom will be coming to the Windows Store later this year. The basic functionality of the app pulls together all of your images and video - stored both on a Windows 10 device or OneDrive - and automatically stitches them together into short videos.

Microsoft demonstrated a link between its Translator app and PowerPoint, enabling presenters to speak in one language while the software generated captions for viewers in another.

Warner: Comey won't testify to intel panel next week
Comey declined to make that promise but told the president he could count on his honesty, the paper said. White House spokesman Sean Spicer told a news briefing that Trump did not demand Comey's loyalty.

It is, in fact, more of a soft change rather than an overhaul, with the tech giant introducing a new design checklist they want developers to think about and apply when designing their products.
