3 children die, 3 relatives badly hurt in Texas house fire

The children were pronounced dead at the scene after authorities located their bodies amid the debris of the residence, Montgomery County sheriff's Lt. Scott Spencer said.

The Montgomery County Fire Marshal's Office said the children who died were Terrance "TJ" Mitchell, 13; Kaila Mitchell, 6; and Kyle Mitchell, 5.

"We've moved from a rescue operation to a search and recovery", Spencer said.

A photo of the children involved in the fire was given to Eyewitness News by a family member.

Eight family members were inside the Shenandoah, Texas, home when a fire started around 4am on Friday, Montgomery County fire officials said.

The officers were hospitalized for smoke inhalation and other injuries.

The children's grandfather and uncle were listed in serious condition at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, while their grandmother was in good condition at Memorial Hermann-The Woodlands Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Three other members of the family were taken to hospitals with injuries that are not life threatening. Another officer with another department also was hurt. All suffered smoke inhalation and burns.

A fire official says police officers attempted to reach the second floor of a burning Houston-area home to rescue children who were trapped but were driven back by flames that engulfed the structure.

Officials said a 10-year-old boy suffered burns and was taken to a hospital.

The age of the house and the extent the blaze had already spread by the time firefighters arrived were what made the fire fatal, said Montgomery County Fire Marshall Jimmy Williams.
