Despite fake racist note, some Olaf students see positive

One less n-r that this school has to deal with. "Shut up or I will shut you up", the "fabricated" note, as Anderson labeled it, said. The college canceled class that Sunday night in anticipation of that Monday's planned demonstrations.

Rosalyn Eaton, the dean of students, said of the protesting students at the time, "They (students) have reason to be concerned and frightened".

The note, which was found outside the Skoglund Center by a student on St. Olaf's campus, led to a almost three-day protest, where students demanded the school respond to the reported racists incidents.

"I think it's disturbing that it was written deliberately, just to stir up the campus", Parsell said.

While the particular note was only one in a series of racially-charged messages that had turned up on campus, it did prompt local police to launch a widespread investigation, even calling in the FBI and a computer forensic consultant for assistance.

Northfield Police Chief Monte Nelson told the paper that he was not aware of any law that would enable him to charge someone for creating the hoax.

I am writing with an update on the College's investigation into the racist messages and acts of hate that have occurred on campus.

"This was not a genuine threat", Mr. Anderson wrote. "We're confident that there is no ongoing threat from this incident to individuals or the community as a whole".

St. Olaf senior Samantha Wells, a sociology and anthropology major, said in April that she found a typewritten note on her auto windshield that read, "I am so glad that you are leaving soon".

Wells also discouraged other students from attempting to conduct their own investigation into who wrote the email, saying that she would rather the focus be on other students who have received racists letters in the past. "I don't care. There is nothing more that I can do". Not because I do not want to let this person go but because I am very stressed and I think that efforts could be utilized elsewhere.

In a report on the incident after the discovery that the note was fabricated, CBS Minnesota added, "It is not clear if all seven notes were composed by the same culprit". I would love to provide it.

Due to privacy laws, Anderson says he can not reveal who wrote the note.

But I can tell you this.

St. Olaf senior Daniel Katuka says the note brought the campus community together "in a positive way" in the face of an apparent threat.

St. Olaf College President David Anderson, in a second email to students Wednesday after a plea for additional information, said the racist note found on a student's vehicle April 29 was "fabricated".

Despite this fact, those concerns are real and, as I said earlier, we are committed to the process we have begun to address them.
