Trump may meet top Russian diplomat in White House

In Moscow, meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin met Wednesday with his security council to discuss US-Russian relations in the context of Lavrov's meeting with Trump, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the RIA Novosti news agency.

Lavrov had planned to be in Washington Wednesday to meet with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.

President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson met with Vladimir Putin's top diplomat at the White House on Wednesday in the highest level, face-to-face contact with Russian Federation of the American leader's young presidency, NBC News reported. It's also Lavrov's first trip to Washington since August 2013, a sign of the high-stakes conversations between the two countries, even as Tillerson and others have said the relationship is at an all-time low.

"I can confirm Secretary Tillerson will attend the White House meeting with President Trump and Foreign Minister Lavrov", the official said Tuesday.

But his hopes for a possible rapprochement with Moscow, so regularly repeated during the campaign, have been derailed.

In his earlier meeting with Lavrov, Tillerson emphasized the USA wouldn't lift sanctions on Russian Federation related to Ukraine until Moscow reverses the actions that triggered the punishment - namely, its Crimea annexation.

Still, Tillerson's meeting provided a blueprint for how the former Cold War foes might go about improving ties. The zones would not cover areas where the USA -led coalition is fighting the Islamic State group, but enforcement and other questions remain unanswered.

The U.S. has been wary of Iran's involvement and the past failures at a cease-fire in Syria. The would-be safe zones would not cover areas where the US -led coalition is fighting IS.

The diplomats met Wednesday in Washington - and there's a new Russian-led agreement to create safe zones in Syria.
