Head of Islamic State in Afghanistan confirmed killed

The Pentagon says a military raid last month killed the head of the Islamic State affiliate in Afghanistan, Islamic State-Khorasan, or ISIS-K.

"The Afghan government is committed to continuing its operations against Daesh and other terrorist groups until they are annihilated", it said in a statement, using another name for the Islamic State group.

U.S. military officials on Sunday endorsed Ghani's claims and detailed that USA and Afghan troops killed the leader of the IS's Afghanistan affiliate in an April raid in Nangarhar province.

Seeking to capitalize on the death of a top Islamic State commander, Afghan forces surged through districts in eastern Afghanistan long held by the radical Islamist group as warplanes pounded militant hideouts, officials said Monday.
